Rooted in the community, thriving together.
The Birch Tree Café is a place where young people who have Down’s Syndrome can work, socialise, and be accepted as part of a vibrant village community.
Local community café, Birch Tree approached us to create their logo and branding materials. The final design, titled the ‘Lucky Leaf’, incorporates the three arrows inspired by the “Lucky Few” movement which was developed to symbolise Down’s Syndrome through the three copies of chromosome 21. Additionally, the arrows represent rising and moving forward.
Since opening in January 2022, Birch Tree Café has been providing a place for young people with Down’s Syndrome to socialise, work and develop valuable life skills to boost their confidence and improve their employability prospects for their future.
After formal education, only 6% of adults with learning disabilities known to their local authority are in work. Birch Tree Café aims to change these numbers and provide a flexible workspace where young adults with Down’s Syndrome can choose the type of work they do and develop independence and workplace skills which they can take forward with them in the future.
Senior creative, Mel McCall worked closely with the team at Birch Tree including interior designers and signage contractors to bring the brand to life throughout the building. The final effect really captures the vibrant local community atmosphere and it’s great to see the social enterprise going from strength to strength including their two recent Stamford Mercury Business Award wins.
